When talk therapy stops working …

I go to therapy, I offer therapy, and, today I want to highlight something I keep coming across in conversations - when talk therapy stops working.

  

First, talk therapy is amazing.  And, I don't want to toss the word around without noting that there are also sooo many therapies out there and available now-a-days: massage therapy, art therapy, physical therapy, animal-supported therapies, …, all of which offer amazing support and results.

A lot of times “therapy” is used to reference talk therapy whether it's with a psychologist or counselor of various types and trainings.  This is a method that traditionally addresses the healing from a top-down, or brain-first approach.

 

 What keeps happening though is that the symptoms you/I/anyone may feel in regards to anything that needs healing, even ones that seems like they're in the head like anxiety, overwhelm, depression, are felt in the body.

What seems to be happening more and more is that people are hitting a point where either this top-down training only goes so far and/or there are so many additional Self-help resources these days that I/you/people can learn a lot of counseling-like info in books and on the internet, as crazy as that may sound.

 

ENTER : a bottom-up approach; using the body as the primary feature of the healing.  “Somatic” is also a word being tossed around a lot and it is a word that means 'of the body'.  Your life story lives in your body.  

  

Think about it - you've lived your entire life, pre-birth even, in your physical body.  It has been through it all!  You may think, but so has my mind, true but not as directly contacted as your body.  So when there are feelings in the body like anxiety, stuckness, continual fatigue, you name it, there's only so far down the mind-based approaches can go.

 

>> what now?   

Just developing awareness of this idea is a great place to start.  Know that it's a thing and it's growing and will not go away because it's needed right now with all that's being revealed - old traumas of the world/humanity erupting.  This is a good thing in the sense that these wounds can open so they can heal.
